Job Description:
2025-26 School Year Purpose Statement The job of Swim Instructor
was established for the purpose/s of planning, coordinating, and
teaching learn-to-swim classes. A Swim Instructor will ensure
participants abide by all safety rules follow instructions and
teach skills appropriate for sound water safety practices. Swim
Instructors also serve as ambassadors for the Aquatic Center and
the Lee’s Summit R7 School District. This position reports to the
Aquatic Center Director or Supervisor. Essential Functions Provides
a safe learning environment for students of all ages Works hours
scheduled for swimming lessons from the beginning to the end of
class; remaining after class to answer participant and/or parent
questions as needed. Teaches age-appropriate lessons & skills
according to experience and ability of participants to meet class
objectives. Is knowledgeable with American Red Cross Learn-to-Swim
Program and other Red Cross water safety courses. It provides for
the health and safety of participants, ensuring all teaching and
practice areas are free of hazards, and students and equipment are
safe. Communicates regularly with participants and their parents,
as appropriate, to ensure awareness of progress and development.
Attends mandatory meetings and training sessions as scheduled
Recognizes and responds effectively in emergencies in accordance
with facility emergency action plans Enforces all R7 District and
Aquatic Facility policies & procedures, rules and regulations at
all times. Completes records and reports Participates in regular
in-service training sessions Evaluates situations involving
swimmers and pool for the purpose of taking appropriate action to
assist and/or reporting incidents to appropriate personnel for
resolutions. Reacts calmly and effectively in emergency situations.
Communicate effectively both verbally and in writing. Performs high
level of customer service, displays professional conduct and
ensures a positive customer experience. Maintains a professional
appearance and demeanor, including abiding by uniform requirements.
Maintains personal physical endurance and agility necessary to
perform job functions. Receives direction and follows written and
oral instructions Other Functions Performs other related duties as
assigned for the purpose of ensuring the efficient and effective
functioning of the work Able to lift at 50 lbs, able to bend,
squat, lift and stretch as needed for job duties. Job Requirements:
Minimum Qualifications Skills, Knowledge and Abilities SKILLS are
required to perform single, technical tasks with a need to
occasionally upgrade skills in order to meet changing job
conditions. Specific skill-based competencies required to
satisfactorily perform the functions of the job include: ability to
swim, tread water, etc.; administer first aid, rescue breathing,
and CPR; monitoring activities; managing staff/performance;
effective listening; and guiding others. KNOWLEDGE is required to
perform basic math; read a variety of manuals, write documents
following prescribed formats, and/or present information to others;
and analyze situations to define issues and draw conclusions.
Specific knowledge-based competencies required to satisfactorily
perform the functions of the job include: first aid and CPR; rescue
procedures; and safety practices. ABILITY is required to schedule
activities; collate data, and use job-related equipment.
Flexibility is required to work with others; work with data
utilizing specific, defined processes; and operate equipment using
standardized methods. Ability is also required to work with a wide
diversity of individuals; work with specific, job-related data; and
utilize a variety of job-related equipment. Problem-solving is
required to identify issues and create action plans.
Problem-solving with data requires following prescribed guidelines,
and problem-solving with equipment is moderate. Specific
ability-based competencies required to satisfactorily perform the
functions of the job include: physical stamina; working flexible
hours; teamwork; and communication with persons of diverse
backgrounds/knowledge/skills. Responsibility Responsibilities
include: working under direct supervision using standardized
procedures; providing information and/or advising others; and
operating within a defined budget. Utilization of some resources
from other work units may be required to perform the job's
functions. There is some opportunity to significantly impact the
organization’s services. Working Environment The usual and
customary methods of performing the job's functions require the
following physical demands: occasional lifting, carrying, pushing,
and/or pulling; some climbing and balancing; some stooping,
kneeling, crouching, and/or crawling; and significant fine finger
dexterity. Generally, the job requires 100% in the water providing
instruction, 45% walking, and 45% standing and 10% lifting of small
children. The job is performed under some temperature extremes and
in a generally hazard-free environment. Experience : Job related
experience is required. Prior experience working with children and
the public is desired. Education: Some high school required
Equivalency : None specified Required Testing: None specified
Continuing Educ./Training: Renew Training, First Aid, CPR for the
Professional Rescuer on a yearly basis. Become WSI Certified
Instructor Certificates & Licenses: WSI preferred FLSA Status:
Non-exempt
